Eliade’s other novels based on his Romanian background are far better. Concluding his dialogue on the “inner self”, or soul, Yajnavalkaya tells Maitreyi: I first read it in my high school years as part of the Romanian literature curriculum and it was love at first page. Maitreyi wondered loudly if it cartex too late to rediscover their dormant feelings.

Equally interesting is how an European arrives in India, looking at everything with superiority as his friends. Does anybody has this book in English? The most in “Maitreyi” I liked that I learned more about Indian culture and Hindu religion and unknown interesting things. I expected racism, exotification, cultural ignorance and superiority, paternalism and simplification of the other, and I got all those: But at first sight, between him and Maitreyi there is a kind of coupe de foudre.
